Dr Peter Macken is an experienced comprehensive eye surgeon with a professional focus on cataract surgery. He also performs glaucoma, eyelid and pterygium surgery. He graduated from UNSW in 1986, and trained at Sydney Eye Hospital, obtaining his specialist qualifications (Fellowship in Ophthalmology: FRANZCO, FRACS) in 1992. Dr Macken undertook a 12 month Glaucoma Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada, completing this in 1994. This was followed by a 6 month Glaucoma Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, UK.
He has been an Examiner in Ophthalmic Pathology for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists from 1995 – 2010, and was Chair for 5 years. He was a VMO at Liverpool Hospital from 2000 – 2007, being Head of Department for 2 years. He is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Wollongong (UOW) regularly teaching medical students
He has published many papers in peer reviewed journals, and presented at national and international scientific meetings.
His major surgical interest is small incision cataract surgery, having performed over 9000 cataract procedures to date. He also has extensive glaucoma surgery experience which includes MIGS devices (Micro Incision Glaucoma Surgery) and the ExPress Mini Glaucoma shunt procedure for which he carried out the first procedure in Australia.
He moved to Bowral in 1995. His busy practice provides a comprehensive ophthalmic service to the region, and he is assisted by visiting associate Ophthalmologists from Sydney. Dr Macken operates at the Southern Highlands Private Hospital and The Bowral & District Public Hospital.
