Cataracts are a common cause of blurred vision. When a cataract is visually significant it can affect reading, watching television and driving, especially at night. When cataracts are the cause of the reduced vision, surgery is often advised, as vision usually continues to deteriorate, as cataracts progress.
The macula is the very centre of the retina. You are reading this text using your macula. It is responsible for your central, detailed vision. It is responsible for your ability to read, discriminate colours, distinguish faces, drive a car and any other activities which require fine vision.
Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the name given to a group of degenerative diseases of the retina that cause loss of central vision.
Glaucoma is a disease that affects the optic nerve. The optic nerve is important for vision, and when it is damaged, such as in glaucoma, vision may be affected as a result. Glaucoma is often (but not always) associated with of raised intraocular pressure (IOP). The most common type of glaucoma is termed “primary” as there is no specific cause, and this occurs most commonly in older patients. Glaucoma is a chronic condition.
Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the eye’s retina that occurs with long-term .
There are two types, or stages of retinopathy: Nonproliferative or proliferative
Nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy develops first. Blood vessels in the eye become larger in certain spots (called microaneurysms)and proliferative retinopathy is the more advanced and severe form of the disease.
